England Rugby attack coach Richard Wigglesworth emphasizes the importance of mental preparation alongside physical fitness for achieving global success. A survey commissioned by Honda reveals how British athletes utilize mental techniques to enhance performance, with visualization being the most popular method.

Richard Wigglesworth , the attack coach for England Men's Rugby Union, has outlined his key strategies for preparing the team for global success, stressing that physical fitness is just one component of the equation. Wigglesworth emphasizes that mental preparation plays an equally crucial role in getting his team ready to compete at the highest level.

'We invest significant time and thought into ensuring our players are in the best possible mental state before they step out to represent England,' he revealed. 'I want my players to showcase their absolute best on the field. Negative thoughts are inevitable, but our coaching program places immense emphasis on arming players with the mental tools to maintain positivity about their next move.' A survey commissioned by Honda, as part of their sponsorship of the RFU ahead of the Guinness Men's Six Nations, highlights how British athletes are implementing these techniques to improve their performance. The study found that nine in ten athletes believe mental preparation is crucial and enhances their sports performance. The most popular technique was mental visualisation, which involves creating a visual image in your mind or mentally rehearsing a planned movement to learn skills or enhance performance. A significant two thirds of sportspersons used mental visualisation to improve focus, while over half use it to boost confidence. Others found it useful to maintain calm in high-pressure situations, and use it to overcome performance anxiety. Richard commented that envisioning your initial moves in a match can instil a sense of a strong start. He then added that: 'Thinking about the most likely skills you will have to perform repeatedly, like a hooker throwing and visualising hitting the target, can be very beneficial.' Rebecca Adamson, Head of Automobiles at Honda Motor Europe (UK), said: 'We believe that the power of dreams extends beyond physical capability to the strength of the mind.' 'We're proud to champion the importance of focus, confidence, and positivity - qualities that inspire individuals to push their limits and achieve their goals both on and off the pitch,' she continued. The survey further revealed that athletes widely employ breathing exercises and positive self-talk to enhance their performance, with over half acknowledging their usefulness. Additionally, some use goal-setting or meditation techniques for mental preparation. Richard Wigglesworth's Top Five Tips for Effective Mental Preparation: 1. Regular practice: Like any other skill, the more you practice visualisation, the better you get at it. Start by experimenting to find what suits you best. 2. Visualise initial actions: Mentally prepare for the first few moments of the game to establish a confident start. 3. Concentrate on repeated skills: Boost your confidence by visualising key skills that you'll use repeatedly, such as lineouts or tackles. 4. Utilise specific scenarios: Collaborate with your coach to pinpoint challenges and visualise how you'll make a positive impact in the game. 5. Rehearse situations: Take a walk around the pitch and mentally prepare for possible scenarios to enhance your confidence during the match
