TODAY'S EDITORIAL: Mental well-being and a healthy economy
TWO doctors and researchers from the southern Philippines have studied the effects of happy people in developing a healthy economy. Dr. Nicholle Mae Amor Tan Maravilla of Cebu Doctors' University and Dr. Myles Joshua Toledo Tan of the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City did a preliminary study on the link between the two.The study casts a wide net.
Filipinos must also understand that there is a complex process in managing mental health issues and full recovery cannot be achieved over a short time.The study's authors suggest several concrete measures to help improve national mental well-being. First, mental health professionals must be mobilized to educate families about mental health and mental disorders to erase stigma and discrimination. They must also help develop mental health policies and service delivery guidelines.
