Lewis Hamilton and George Russell crashed on the opening lap of the Qatar Grand Prix.
With tension, at least on the track, seemingly mounting between the Mercedes team-mates, Ralf Schumacher has urged the Brackley squad to “intervene now”.
Lining up second and third on the grid behind Max Verstappen, Hamilton made the better start on the soft tyres and tried to pass Russell around the outside at the same time that the 25-year-old tried to draw alongside Verstappen. But as Hamilton turned in for the corner, the seven-time World Champion crashed into his team-mate with his race over. The Briton told Mercedes that he had been “taken out by my team-mate”.
Ralf Schumacher says Mercedes need to get control of their drivers before the situation deteriorates.“There’s a bit of work to be done between the two now. You can deal with each other either way, the team has to intervene now.” “The mistake wasn’t a big one, but it had big consequences. Of course, something like that shouldn’t happen.”to say: “It was 100% my fault and I take full responsibility. Apologies to my team and to George.”
