Thunderstorms are a common occurrence during hot weather periods - but why is this the case and when can we expect the next one? The Met Office explains all.
A weather expert has shed light on why thunderstorms often follow periods of hot weather, as Scotland is hammered by thunder and lightning this morning. A Met Office weather warning is in place for the vast majority of the country after storms developed over the west of the UK overnight and are now hitting the nation hard. Parts of Scotland have already been hit by rolling thunder, lightning flashes, and sudden downpours.
As explained by the Met Office, the primary components for a thunderstorm are atmospheric instability and humidity. Thunderstorms typically occur when there is an increase in moisture in the system and they generally develop in the afternoon following continuous hot weather earlier in the day.
