The west side of Nottingham and Nottinghamshire are within the region that could be hit

More than half of Nottinghamshire could be battered by thunderstorms on Sunday, May 12, the Met Office has warned. A new yellow warning has been put in place from 12pm until 10pm on the day, meaning that heavy showers and thunderstorms "could lead to some disruption in places, especially to travel."

The area affected covers the west side of the country including Wales, Manchester, Bristol and Birmingham and borders the west side of Nottingham city, covering suburbs such as Wollaton, Aspley, Bilborough and Bulwell. Towns and villages on the west side of the country are also in the region, such as Stapleford, Toton, Sandiacre, Beeston, Selston, Eastwood, Kirkby-in-Ashfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield.

The Met Office says: "Heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to break out in the south of the country late Sunday morning and early Sunday afternoon, moving steadily north whilst growing into larger areas of rain before clearing the area."Some intense downpours are possible in a few places, giving up to 30 mm in less than hour and perhaps 40-50 mm over 2 to 3 hours leading to surface water flooding.

The thunderstorm could lead to spray and sudden flooding, leading to difficult driving conditions and some road closures as well as a chance of delays and some cancellations to train and bus services where flooding or lightning strikes occur. There would also be a "slight chance" that power cuts could occur and other services to some homes and businesses could be lost, a small chance of fast-flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life, particularly in places such as road and railway underpasses, and a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds.
