Tonight could potentially be the coldest of the year so far 🥶
Five days of snow and ice warnings have been issued across the UK, spanning from Northern Ireland and Wales to Inverness and down to Cornwall and Devon. Forecasters have warned that areas of the North Pennines, Southern Uplands, higher parts of the Central Belt, and southern Highlands in Scotland could experience between 12 and 15 inches of snow on Thursday and Friday.
On Thursday, milder air may edge in further north, bringing a risk of more snow and rain which could turn heavy in places. The rest of the UK will continue to stay cold. On Friday, people will see continued risk of"heavy snow and significant disruption" - especially in the north. This may turn milder to the south and some parts could see strong winds.Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said colder overnight conditions are set to hit cities later in the week – with the mercury plunging to minus 4C in London and minus 6C in Birmingham and Belfast. He said: “Temperatures will be much, much colder than we would expect at this time of year.
“We have got this feed of cold air coming in from a much higher latitude. We expect these conditions to remain in place until at least next weekend and possibly longer because sometimes these conditions can be quite stubborn and not easily subject to change.”
