The Met has failed to meet its target for new police recruits under Boris Johnson’s flagship manifesto pledge to put an extra 20,000 officers on the streets,Police forces had until 31 March to meet quotas for new officers set by the Home Office as part of the former Prime Minister’s 2019 pledge to restore the numbers lost during a decade of austerity cuts.
When the last set of statistics were published at the end of December, the Met was more than 1,300 officers short, meaning it needed to recruit almost 450 people a month between January and March. “First, there’s been a lot of negative stories about the Met in recent times, so it’s not surprising people have a negative view of a career with us.
“We will continue to work to the Police Uplift Programme target for the Met whilst focusing on the quality of our new recruits to ensure we bring the right people in to the Met, in alignment with our mission of more trust, less crime, high standards.” In January, it emerged that the Met had been recruiting officers without having had a face-to-face interview.
