Mark Zuckerberg , the CEO of Meta , has announced significant changes to his social media platforms, including Facebook , Instagram , and Threads . The 40 year old tech mogul aims to promote ' free speech ' and return to the basics with a 'return to their roots'. This shift will alter how the company moderates user posts, aiming to prevent accidental censorship.
In an online video, Zuckerberg discussed the political landscape, stating that they plan to replace their fact-checking programme with trusted partners for a community-driven system. This approach is similar to X, formerly known as Twitter, which is managed by billionaire Elon Musk. However, recent changes on X, coupled with Musk's appointment at the White House following President-Elect Donald Trump's re-election, have led to a mass departure of loyal users. The platform lost approximately 2.7 million active Apple and Android users in the US within two months at the end of last year. This exodus has been attributed to feeds being overrun by harmful and inappropriate content, allowing radical views to easily penetrate. Bruce Daisley, a former vice president of Twitter in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, has expressed his concerns about the social media platform now known as X. Speaking to The Guardian, he likened the platform to a Christmas market where a group of racist protesters had gathered, saying: 'If I went out to a Christmas market, and if in the corner of this Christmas market there was a group of racist protesters, I probably wouldn't stay there,' He also voiced his belief that under Elon Musk's ownership, those with extreme views have been given too much exposure and leeway, reports the Mirror.
