Mets provide another late-inning comeback, stunning Phils in Game 1

New York Mets' Pete Alonso, lower left, high fives a teammate after hitting an RBI sacrifice fly during the eighth inning of Game 1 of a baseball NL Division Series against the Philadelphia Phillies, Saturday, Oct. 5, 2024, in Philadelphia.

The five-run inning gave the Mets a four-run lead, paving the way for a 6-2 Game 1 win that they stole from the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. The Mets need two more wins to move on to the NL Championship Series. The decisive eighth inning also featured RBI singles from Brandon Nimmo and J.D. Martinez and sacrifice flies from Pete Alonso and Starling Marte.

In Kodai Senga’s first game back from a calf injury and his first start since July 26, he allowed a lead-off home run to Phillies designated Kyle Schwarber. It was Schwarber’s fifth career lead-off home run in the playoffs, and he made it count, driving into the second deck in right field, 425 feet deep.

Left-hander David Peterson replaced Senga in the third inning. The 6-foot-6 left-hander allowed just one hit while holding the Phillies scoreless in his three innings.
