A cyclist who was set to compete at the UCI Cycling World Championship time trials in Stirling last month has told how her dreams were dashed when her nation’s Olympic Committee pulled the plug on at the last minute.

Andrea Martínez, 29, had been due to contest the women’s individual time trial through the city on Thursday, August 10.

She rides professionally for the Belgian team, Duolar-Chevalmeire, having uprooted her life to move to Europe to pursue her dream. She hoped the switch would improve her abilities and help her to be more competitive. This year alone, she has already raced 17 more days on the European competition calendar than she did previously.

The Mexican rider took to her Instagram page to share email exchanges with the UCI, in which they confirm her registration in the road race, individual time trial and team time trial. “That’s why I made a request and, after several loans, I managed to raise the money to be able to travel and participate in Glasgow .
