Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pushes back against Donald Trump's suggestion to rename the Gulf of Mexico, while Canada faces mounting pressure from US tariffs and territorial claims.
Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Donald Trump's proposal to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the 'Gulf of America' by suggesting that US territory previously part of Mexico should be called 'Mexican America'. Trump's comments, made during a press conference, also included suggestions to annex Canada and Greenland, and exert control over the Panama Canal. Trump has threatened 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada unless they curb migration and drug trafficking.
Sheinbaum noted that parts of the US, including California and Texas, were once part of Mexico and Spain. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau dismissed Trump's proposal to annex Canada, calling it 'a snowball's chance in hell'. Canada's Foreign Minister Melanie Joly criticized Trump's comments, saying they show a 'complete lack of understanding' of Canada.
