The Irish Mirror revealed exclusively today that the Iranian State news service had reported that our Tanaiste and Foreign Affairs Minister, Micheal Martin, had discussed the release of an Irish hostage during a diplomatic phone call on Monday evening.
President Michael D Higgins has made another intervention on the Israel/Gaza situation, strongly condemning the actions of both sides that could breach international law and constitute war crimes. His comments came as speculation mounted that an Irish citizen is among the confirmed 242 hostages taken by Hamas fighters during their murderous raid of October 7th.
A spokesman for the Tanaiste did not confirm nor deny this last night, telling the Mirror that they do not comment on individual cases. “The families of these people are desperate for a deal and have come out and said they would accept any form of a deal to get their loved ones out of Gaza, including the release of Palestinian prisoners in exchange for those that are in custody.”
“I know the Tánaiste has had a phone call with the Iranian foreign minister but I was given a readout on that, but not that particular detail.“ was about bilateral relations and also about the situation in Gaza. He replied: “I'm not sure what the precedent is but what I can say is I haven't been briefed on that.
The Iranian Embassy told the Mirror that hostages was specifically raised in the phone call with the Tanaiste.
