There has been another twist in the hunt for Manchester United's inaugural sporting director appointment following news from rivals Liverpool
Liverpool are set to welcome back former sporting director Michael Edwards in a move that could see in-demand supremo Richard Hughes join him at Anfield but the news comes as a setback for Manchester United and Sir Dave Brailsford.
Ashworth wants to move to the North West after two years in the North East at St James' Park but the Magpies are playing hardball over losing the former Brighton & Hove Albion man. The effects of this news could be seismic in the context of the hierarchical movement across the Premier League. Hughes, a former Premier League footballer, arrived on the South Coast and worked alongside Newcastle manager Eddie Howe during his spell with the Cherries.
An appointment of Ashworth would be another marker of intent from the Ineos Group, following their minority stake acquisition at the beginning of 2024, with United looking to reassert themselves as a powerhouse in the Premier League and the European stage. However, their efforts to prise the executive away from St James' Park could face a fresh setback with Newcastle forced to look elsewhere for a replacement - in light of the news that Hughes looks set to follow Edwards to Liverpool FC.
