Labour have told Mr Gove to 'give up on the PR stunts and focus on turning his rhetoric on the environment into genuine action'.
Michael Gove has been accused of"hypocrisy" for drinking from a disposable cup while vowing to cut his use of single-use plastics for Lent.
The environment secretary used the biodegradable cup during an appearance before MPs on Ash Wednesday as he said he"seeks to minimise" his use of plastic in the run-up to Easter. Compostable cups were introduced to the Houses of Parliament last year, but campaigners say that reusable containers are better for the planet.Recounting what he planned to give up for Lent, Mr Gove explained:"I said that I would reduce my use of single-use plastic."
Scientists writing in the Royal Society journal have warned we still do not know how long some types of compostable cup take to biodegrade. They say standards and test methods are"insufficient in their ability to realistically predict the biodegradability" of items such as compostable bags.
