To mark the bicentenary of the first steam-hauled passenger train, Michael Portillo embarks on a journey through time with a two-part special, 200 Years of The Railways, exploring the impact and future of railways. Simultaneously, the return of beloved series Great Continental Railway Journeys and Great British Railway Journeys promises more captivating adventures across Europe and Britain.

BBC Daytime has commissioned a two-part special, 200 Years of The Railways, to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the first steam-hauled passenger train. The special will air on BBC Two later this year and will see Michael Portillo travel by train across the Northeast and Northwest of England. He will explore the impact railways have had over the past two centuries and examine their potential future role.

This celebration comes as two new series, Great Continental Railway Journeys and Great British Railway Journeys, return to BBC Two from March 10th. Great Continental Railway Journeys will see Portillo journey through some of Europe's most captivating regions, from Switzerland to Croatia and Bosnia, Norway and Denmark to Normandy and Brittany. He will delve into how nature and history have shaped life in these enchanting settings. Great British Railway Journeys will follow Portillo as he explores Britain's most scenic and intriguing locations by rail. From Epping Forest to the Black Country, the Lake District to the Weald, this series will take viewers on a journey through history, showcasing the beauty of Britain, all accessible by train. Michael Portillo expressed his enthusiasm for the new series and the special, emphasizing the joy of meeting wonderful characters along the way. He also thanked viewers for their continued support. John Comerford, Head of Naked West, a Fremantle label and Co-Executive producer, shared the excitement of celebrating this significant anniversary with both a brand-new commission and the return of the popular journeys series.
