The First Minister said that she was 'aghast and horrified' to find out that two former senior press officers within her party had provided employment references for Mr McMonagle after his arrest
First Minister Michelle O'Neill has said that she is "very confident" that she took the correct actions after being made aware of Michael McMonagle's arrest.
"I am absolutely aghast and horrified that two former employees decided to give a reference to this individual," she said. The First Minister told the committee that as soon as she was made aware that the references had been provided, the party took "immediate action". "Aligned to that, I am very confident that I took all the correct action in terms of what I needed to do in terms of the disciplinary action within my own party and he left our employment and rightly so. "
"I am very confident that whenever we were aware of what we knew in terms of the fact that there was a criminal investigation underway that then became an issue for the policing and justice system to deal with and I was confident that that was the case.
