The former first lady goes high, not low, but lands all her punches - she is her party's supreme orator

Michelle Obama addresses the Democratic National Convention . Two of the most effortlessly talented people in American politics and avatars for a lost era of decency and intellectual aspiration.

As she mentioned in her speech and has done before, life at the top – especially as a Black couple – is nothing short of brutal. She has already forfeited her anonymity for life and clearly intends to draw the line there as far as electoral politics goes, largely limiting her campaign appearances Still, all the joy and well-earned pride aside, the Obamas warned in dire tones that the election will be desperately close and that oncelose their edge, there can be no allowing the current surge of enthusiasm to drop off. That message could not be more crucial – but then again, where enthusiasm is concerned, it’s not as if Trump is putting up much competition.

Trump’s speech was ostensibly a policy one focusing on law and order, but as with his other recent efforts to stay on any kind of substantive message, it came off more like primal scream therapy. Doomily and dubiously he claimed that Americans cannot cross the street to buy a loaf of bread without being raped and then shot dead. Trump riffed for more than an hour on a litany of grievances, many of them as usual based on outright falsehoods.
