U.S. officials insisted the veto did not represent opposition to a two-state solution.

The United States was alone Thursday in voting against a U.N. Security Council resolution that would advance the Palestinian Authority’s bid for full membership status at the United Nations. The single veto killed the measure, proposed by Algeria on behalf of Arab nations. Britain and Switzerland abstained. U.S. officials had warned earlier Thursday that voting for statehood now would undermine efforts at a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians.

“We have been pretty clear that sustainable peace in the region can only be achieved through a two-state solution with Israel’s security guaranteed. And it remains our view that the most expeditious path toward statehood for the Palestinian people is through direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority,” State Department spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters earlier Thursday.
