By Nicole Johnston, international correspondentI was working as a correspondent in Gaza in 2011 when Yahya Sinwar was released from an Israeli jail as part of a prisoner swap that saw one Israeli soldier exchanged for around 1,000 Palestinian prisoners. For two days, busloads of freed prisoners were released back into Gaza. One of them included Yahya Sinwar.

Members of Hamas, Sinwar's family and Palestinian supporters came to visit a man who had spent two decades inside an Israeli jail. With hundreds of prisoners returned to Gaza, there were hundreds of tents erected across the strip. His interview at the time was the usual Hamas talking points, that the group would continue to 'fight against Israel's occupation' because it was the Palestinians' 'right' to do so.
