Redevelopment efforts continue in the Southland District, as Middleburg Heights City Council recently passed legislation authorizing Mayor Matt Castelli and Finance Director Jason Stewart to execute a purchase agreement for a 7.3-acre parcel along Smith Road.

The revitalized area ultimately will include mixed-use development, as well as pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly accessibility to eateries, shopping and the nearby Cleveland Metroparks. The legislation adopted at council’s July 22 special meeting indicates the acquired property “is part of the city’s redevelopment of the Southland area pursuant to the Middleburg Heights Community Master Plan and Southland Planning Study.”“This is the old Burlington site … with a lot of frontage on Smith Road, where you can all see redevelopment taking place as we speak today,” Castelli told council about the new purchase.for $2.2 million.
