North Manchester Golf Club has received approval to demolish its existing clubhouse and build a new one along with 56 homes on its current site.
A golf club in Middleton is set to undergo a significant transformation with the construction of a new clubhouse and 56 homes on the site of its current facilities. North Manchester Golf Club has received the green light to demolish its existing clubhouse, pro shop, function room, and greenkeepers store. In their place, a modern clubhouse featuring 'four attractive arches' will be erected closer to the first tee.
This new clubhouse will boast three floors, encompassing a reception, pro-shop, members' bar, and snooker room. Furthermore, an impressive event room offering panoramic views overlooking the lake, the first tee, and the fairway will be incorporated into the design.Concurrent with the demolition of the old clubhouse, joint developers Duchy Homes will embark on the construction of 56 homes. The 2.7-hectare site situated off Manchester Old Road will comprise a mix of three, four, and five-bedroom homes, each equipped with off-street parking. The development will also incorporate areas of open green space, aiming to balance residential construction with the preservation of natural areas. A larger-scale version of this plan was previously rejected by the planning committee in 2019 due to concerns regarding its impact on the green corridor where the golf course resides. This time, objectors and ward councillors reiterated their apprehensions about the encroachment on green space. Councillors Peter Williams and June West expressed worries about the potential harm to local wildlife. Hilary Murray, a resident on Manchester Old Road, raised an additional concern, suggesting that a nearby former landfill site might have contaminated the soil earmarked for construction. Council planning officers addressed these concerns, emphasizing that a thorough assessment had been conducted and that experts would investigate the issue as part of the planning conditions.Chair of North Manchester Golf Club, Nick O'Toole, presented a compelling argument before the planning committee, asserting that the project would safeguard the club's 130-year legacy. He pointed out that the current clubhouse is outdated and in a state of disrepair. Mr. O'Toole stressed the importance of the project, stating that it would ensure the club's continued relevance and value to the community for future generations. Ultimately, councillors at the planning committee meeting held on January 30th unanimously approved the application
