A Nottingham midwife has been suspended for 12 months after admitting to accessing the records of over 1,200 patients without permission. Victoria Reed, a former band six midwife at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), used a mobile device to browse patient documents while at home, compromising the private information of individuals in trauma, intensive care, and neonatal units.

An experienced Nottingham midwife has admitted to accessing the records of over 1,200 patients without permission. Victoria Reed, a former band six midwife at Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), used a mobile device to browse patient documents while at home, compromising the private information of individuals in trauma, intensive care, and neonatal units. These incidents occurred between September 2020 and September 2021. Initially, Ms.

Reed claimed to have accessed only 87 records during an investigation, but a further probe revealed a much larger breach, with 1,214 patient records accessed inappropriately. The records included those of 640 trauma inpatients, 387 adult intensive care unit patients, and 97 neonatal patients. Ms. Reed accessed the records through Nervecentre, an electronic patient record system used by NHS hospitals. She offered no explanation for her actions, which the panel described as a 'clear breach of confidentiality'. During the hearing, Ms. Reed stated she did not 'actively source' the records or know any of the patients involved. She acknowledged the seriousness of her actions and accepted that she had 'betrayed the trust' of her patients. Ms. Reed, who has since left NUH and now works as a housekeeper at a health spa hotel, said she began an online data protection course four months after her departure from the hospital. The course, according to Ms. Reed, provided 'more in-depth training' than what she received as a midwife. The panel, in their conclusion, stated that Ms. Reed's actions 'put patients at risk of harm' as those affected may not feel comfortable sharing relevant medical information in the future. Despite her unblemished career as a midwife, Ms. Reed was suspended from the profession for 12 months by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) on January 10. The panel decided that a period of suspension would be sufficient to protect patients, maintain public confidence in midwives, and uphold professional standards
