Vivianne Miedema, who left Arsenal for Manchester City in the summer transfer window, received a warm welcome back to the Emirates Stadium as her new side drew with her former club.
As the team news was relayed over the PA system at the Emirates ahead of Arsenal ’s Women’s Super League opener against Manchester City , it was notable that the loudest cheer from the home support was reserved for a member of the opposition.
That does not mean, however, that the forward’s decision to join City - one of the Gunners’ title rivals - following the expiration of her contract, did not raise some eyebrows, and the prospect of Miedema’s Emirates return has taken up plenty of column inches since this season’s WSL fixture list was unveiled back in July.
It was a goal that came against the run of play but one which helped propel Arsenal into the ascendency, with Blackstenius spurning a great chance to double the Gunners’ advantage after beating Ayaka Yamashita to an inch-perfect long ball from Katie McCabe. But still it will have jarred for many inside the stadium to see their once-revered markswoman off the mark for her new club in the WSL. Arsenal could, and perhaps should, have restored their advantage through Blackstenius who drew a fine save from Yamashita on the stroke of half-time and may feel aggrieved that Caitlin Foord’s close-range finish was ruled out for what looked like an incredibly tight offside decision after the restart.
"It’s what Viv does," manager Taylor said after the game. "She shows her quality at the right moments. It would have been a big day for her today and it’s a tough one for her to get through because there would have been some nice moments for her today and I’m sure it’s one she is happy has been put to bed now.
