The change announced Monday is designed to eliminate 'significant barriers' for migrants seeking citizenship.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services announced Monday it is introducing an option for migrants to list their gender as “x” when applying for naturalization.

“Adding a third gender option helps ensure that secure identity documents and biographical data are accurate and helps both external stakeholders and individuals requesting immigration benefits,” USCIS “Historically, USCIS forms and associated documents have only offered two gender options,” the agency said. “This has created significant barriers for requestors who do not identify with either of those options.”Offering only male and female selections also resulted in administrative issues when applicants presented foreign government-issued documents listing third genders, according to the agency.
