They’d originally been offered a 2% wage rise and were told there was no further money; that offer later rose to 5%, although as a one-off payment. The deal on the table is now much fairer.
At one point we had the ludicrous prospect of senior management receiving the same pay rise as workers on £20,000. I found this baffling. Why should someone on £100,000 per annum receive a £10,000 cost-of-living award, while most workers were being offered a fifth of that? If anything, the Covid-19 pandemic has made us question the fairness of wage differentials where the gap between those at the top and those at the bottom keeps getting bigger.
It’s a good thing that we’ve been forced to re-evaluate the importance of manual labour and the service of workers who enable us to function as a society. Other workers are still negotiating pay deals with local authority body Cosla. It would be good to see the Scottish Government and Cosla express views on how Scottish charities can help their staff during the cost-of-living crisis.
For those on low wages, this proposal from Truss has less impact than Boris Johnson’s whacky analogy of saving £10 a year by buying a new kettle at £20.
