Coming off the sugar high of ranking the Top 10 locally owned doughnut shops in San Antonio , it seemed like there was something missing. Maybe a hole in the coverage somewhere . That hole is where the national and regional chains live, the kind of everywhere-all-the-time places I bypass in favor of covering local operations. But we all go. Some of us have tottered in the late-night line at Voodoo Doughnut . Most of us drive past the “ Hot Now ” signs at Krispy Kreme at some point.
com Somewhere in-between Voodoo Doughnut: The Homer, Grape Ape, Voodoo Doll, Memphis Mafia, Marshall Mathers, Oh-Captain- My-Captain. I tried them all, more than 40 variations, when Voodoo first staked its claim downtown, drawing a curious mix of parochial outrage and lines out the door when it replaced the quirky local pizzeria Playland. Some are great, the ones with Kool-Aid dust and Cap’n Crunch and M&Ms.
