Mikey Moore proves he gets Rangers like few current stars do

If it was Moore's last meaningful act at Rangers, at least the 18-year-old has left an indelible mark

Admittedly, it took him a while to settle in a new league. The manager who signed him, Russell Martin, was brutally axed after a disastrous start in the hot seat.

He wasn’t brilliant in every game he played. But you certainly could never accuse him of lacking desire, effort, and a hunger to influence and affect games. If Danny Rohl had a few more like him at Ibrox, their Premiership title bid might have had a different outcome.

As he addressed issues of mentality, what it means to play for Rangers and being a team rather than a group of individuals - Rohl must hope a few others take heed of what Moore was saying. In the recent Old Firm defeat at Celtic Park, when Tuur Rommens was grappling with Alistair Johnston, the teenager sprinted over to help his pal. Moore gets it at Rangers. But he reckons too few in that current dressing-room do.

He said: “When you’re here, you see that this club has such history. It’s a great place to play and to be.

“We’ve delivered no trophies this year and it’s not good enough really, to be honest. “We’ve spoken and had conversations. For us, that needs to be the goal, to deliver for fans who come and watch us every single week and support us. View 2 Images“For me, there’s no digging out players.

But I think as a squad, there needs to be a lot more driving each other to be better.

“I don’t think we’ve done that enough. In tough moments this year, we haven’t got together as a team and said: ‘Right, we’re going to stick together, we’re going to get through it’. ” Moore struggles to comprehend that lack of fight and togetherness at a club which is expected to challenge for honours. Because for him, in his first loan stint away from Spurs, he says his mentality has been tested like never before.

And rather than be fazed by that - he insists it’s the biggest positive he’ll take from his time at Rangers. Moore said: “I don’t think boys have went out of their way to not do it. I just think as a team, we need to help each other more.

“When it’s getting tough, we need to get behind each other and not get on each other’s backs. It’s a collective.

“When we’re doing well in a game, everyone’s full of confidence. “No matter what happens now, this club’s been a huge part of what I’m going to become and it’s helped me so much. “I’m now a fan of this club for the rest of my life. It’s been a special experience.

And the biggest learning point has been mentally.

“I’ve changed so much as a person. The way I look at stuff now, I’ve realised that every day means something.

“I’d come into training and not be on it as much as I need to be. But if you want to win every single game, that’s the way you need to be. As a team, we need to learn that as well. ” Moore deserved an ovation from the Rangers crowd on potentially his last game at Ibrox on Wednesday night.

But a defeat to Hibs and farcical circumstances surrounding skipper James Tavernier’s farewell meant it was a damp squib for the youngster. But he says he’ll only have good memories of his time in Scotland - especially his Old Firm goal against Celtic at Parkhead in January. He said: “It’s not the way I wanted it to end on Wednesday night. I’ve got so much love for everyone here.

I understand it, we were losing again.

“So, I understand why people weren’t in the stadium at the end. They’re not just going to hang about for me.

“They’re disappointed with the results and the way the last few weeks have been. But I think they respect that I’ve tried to give my all for the club.

“It’s gutting, to be honest . I don’t think any of us three weeks ago expected to be in the position we’re in now. But it’s our fault and we need to take that. It’s gutting the way it’s gone.

“But I’ve shown that I’m still trying. It’s nice to have that respect .

“People remember winning titles, not individuals. That’s the disappointing thing for me.

“My best moment was at Celtic. That day, I realised what that game meant to people. I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.

“When I go back to England, I’ll tell them how tough it is here and how I’ve been challenged mentally every day. “I’m going to miss the fans because I’ve never felt love like I’ve felt here. “They say stuff to me even when I’m just walking about in the city or where I live. “It’s nice getting that recognition from people.

No matter what happens in the summer - even if it’s just a few months away, I’m going to miss that. So we’ll see. ”
