Labour's Ed Miliband maintains that the global shift to Net Zero emissions is unstoppable, even though Donald Trump has once again withdrawn the US from the Paris climate agreement. Miliband's statement comes despite concerns that major polluters like China, India, and the US are lagging behind the UK's commitment to climate leadership.
Labour's Ed Miliband has issued a warning to Donald Trump , stating that the world's shift towards Net Zero emissions is 'unstoppable,' despite Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the Paris climate agreement. Just hours after returning to the White House, Trump signed an executive order to exit the international treaty, which came into effect in 2016 and aims to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.
However, Trump, who campaigned on a promise to 'drill baby drill,' seeks to increase US oil and gas production and reverse climate regulations, putting him at odds with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, who has pledged to decarbonize the UK's electricity grid by 2030 as part of Labour's green agenda.Miliband, the Energy Security and Net Zero Secretary, was questioned today about the Government's ambition to position Britain as a 'climate leader' among global nations. He was challenged regarding major polluters like China, India, and the US, who appear 'somewhat less interested in climate leadership' compared to the UK. Despite Trump's withdrawal from the Paris agreement, Miliband, appearing before a House of Lords committee, asserted that the world's transition to Net Zero is 'unstoppable.' He emphasized that 90 percent of the world now has Net Zero targets in place. While acknowledging the challenges at last year's COP29 climate summit in Azerbaijan, which he described as '198-dimensional chess,' Miliband said there was a willingness to reach an agreement in Baku. He stressed that while the transition is unstoppable, it is not moving fast enough. Pointing to China's significant investments in renewable energy and his upcoming trip to India, which is also progressing in renewable energy, Miliband highlighted the global momentum towards clean energy. He underscored the importance of UK leadership in this transition, emphasizing that even though the UK only accounts for one percent of global emissions, its example can have a significant impact. Miliband urged the committee not to 'underestimate the impact of British leadership' on climate issues, stating, 'It's really tough - I think the transition is unstoppable, we need to make it move faster.' This marks Trump's second withdrawal from the Paris agreement, having previously done so in 2017 during his first term, only to have the action reversed by Joe Biden in 2021
