After a Bald Eagle crashed to the ground on Ft. Wainwright, members of the military community came together to rescue the injured bird.

|FAIRBANKS, Alaska - On April 8, a Bald Eagle fell to the ground on Ft. Wainwright, requiring medical assistance and members of the military community stepped up to help the bird receive the proper care it needed.

That’s when she saw what appeared to be two eagles fighting in the air. While the two birds battled in the sky, things turned serious quickly. The aerial conflict would end when one of the eagles crashed into the parking lot of the Exchange on post. “As I was walking I noticed the ravens started going after just going down and banging him on his head with their talons and that’s when I started running,” said Lawson.

Initially, it was going to take a short trip on an Alaska Airlines flight, but legal uncertainty kept the bird grounded. Still, the injured Bald Eagle needed to travel south where it could be treated by specialists. The solution to travel south was soon underway as Eve Baker, the public affairs officer for Ft. Wainwright, volunteered to take the bird over 360 miles south to the largest city in the 49th state.

Once at Bird TLC, the eagle was diagnosed and treatment began. “What we saw in the initial assessment is still what we know at this time, which is the fractured ulna from puncture wounds in his feet and then suspected head trauma,” said Laura Atwood, the exec. director of Bird TLC. Currently, the eagle is being treated and remains in a rehabilitation enclosure in Anchorage where it may stay for a few weeks to a few months until it is ready to fly.
