Sefton Council receives £5.6m funding to support schools and community recovery after mass stabbing and riots.
Millions of pounds is set to be pumped into services across Southport , with most of the money being used to support schools around the town. The funding comes following the tragic death of Alice da Silva Aguiar, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Bebe King in a mass stabbing during a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on July 29 last year. Sefton Council explained the £5.
6m funding is a step to address the emotional, social and economic impacts of both the attack on July 29 and the subsequent riots that took place on July 30, as well as looking to the future of the town. The money has come from the government pledging monetary aid as part of its Community Recovery Fund to support the town. The local authority explained how the government has thanked the people in the borough for the continued work and support throughout the summer, with the town showing unity in the aftermath of the deaths and disorder. The funding is focused heavily on the efforts to prioritise children, families and businesses in the town and allow for the creation and extension of programs that address the immediate and long-term needs. This includes mental health support, community rebuilding and helping improve the local economy. As a result, residents, business owners, community groups and volunteers are all being encouraged to take advantage of and participate in initiatives and resources that will benefit the town. The funding is broken down as follows: Councillor Marion Atkinson, Leader of Sefton Council, said: “We have said from the outset that we will do whatever it takes during this recovery process and that everything we do will have the families of Alice, Bebe and Elsie Dot at the heart of it. We’ve been really appreciative of the support from the government and this funding will go towards the immediate priorities as we continue to come to terms with what has happene
