A 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Gotham, Nottinghamshire, on December 17, shaking homes in the area. While the British Geological Survey did not receive any reports of people feeling the tremor, residents in nearby Whitwick confirmed experiencing shaking.
Homes were shaken last night when a mini earthquake took place in the county. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed that the tremor occurred shortly before midnight on Tuesday, December 17. The earthquake's epicentre was in Gotham, a Nottinghamshire village near the Leicestershire border. The 2.2 magnitude seismic event is one of several recorded in the region in recent years. Davie Galloway, a seismologist at the BGS, said: “On December 17 at 23:55, a 2.
2 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Gotham, Nottinghamshire. The earthquake was detected on our seismometer site in Charnwood Forest, Leicestershire, however, we have not received any reports that it was felt by anyone.” BGS officials say the earthquake struck at a depth of 8km. According to Leicestershire Live, a number of homes across the border also felt the impact. James Sibson of Whitwick, near Coalville, described how his whole house shook during the tremor. The 31-year-old said he had just woken up and was checking the time when the tremor struck. He claims it lasted about two to three seconds. Mr Sibson added: 'I saw items on my bedside table moving as well.' He revealed he had previously experienced a more severe earthquake while in Taiwan earlier this year. He is curious about the events and has since researched more about the reported fault line that runs through the nearby village of Thringstone. The area has a history of small seismic events, though they rarely reach magnitudes above 2.5
