The thresholds determining how much you can save into your Isa, how much you can inherit and at what point you pay income tax all remain frozen for now
Rachel Reeves announced in the Budget that she is unfreezing income tax and national insurance thresholds – the point at which earnings trigger different taxation amounts: basic, higher or additional. However this won’t change until April 2028.
The UK has seen very high inflation recently, with average wages rising, which has dragged more people into higher tax bands. Here are Blick Rothenberg’s calculations for tax and other schemes had they been adjusted in line with inflation.Known as a “stealth tax”, the freezing of income tax means you start paying it at an earlier point than you would have done had it been increased, and if you are a higher or additional rate taxpayer more of your salary goes into the higher tax brackets.
If you do buy a home, the savings and the bonus made from the Lisa can be used towards a deposit on a first home worth up to £450,000. This limit has also not increased since the product launched, despite the large increase in house prices over this time. For example, someone who had £16,000 of their own money invested alongside the £4,000 of the government bonus, would be fined £5,000 – a loss of £1,000 of that persons initial savings.will remain at £20,000 for cash Isas and stocks and shares Isas, £4,000 for Lifetime Isas and £9,000 for Junior Isas until 5 April 2030.
