Mining is lagging behind other sectors in adopting Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, with investment in the technology declining since 2021, according to a recent report by satellite communications leader Viasat. The findings suggest that while IoT adoption is growing in other industries, mining companies are struggling to maintain connectivity and strategy development, leaving them at a comparative disadvantage.
Viasat's report, titled The State of Industrial IoT in 2024, brings together insights from business leaders across agriculture, energy, mining, transport, and utilities.According to these experts, the mining sector emerged as the least likely to have or be developing an IoT strategy, with only 83% of respondents reporting efforts in this area, compared to the overall average of 88% across industries. The report also found that mining's IoT investment levels have dropped by 2.4% since 2021.Equipment over workforceOne culprit behind the industry's slow IoT uptake could be an enduring emphasis on equipment and machinery over workforce applications.IoT solutions for equipment monitoring and control—such as pumps, lights, and conveyor belts—are widely deployed (36%) or under trial (30%). By contrast, IoT for personnel tracking to enhance health and safety lags significantly, with only 18% of mining respondents reporting deployments in this area.'Insights from our latest report suggest the siloed approach mining operators have towards technology could be holding back their IoT ambitions,' said Simon Hawkins, vice president of Commercial and Innovation at Viasat. 'Specifically, prioritising equipment monitoring over workforce safety has resulted in a lag in IoT strategy development – this could be down to a perceived higher return on investment for equipment-focused IoT.' Connectivity challengesNearly a third of respondents across all industries cited inconsistent connectivity as a barrier to successful IoT deploymen
