The saga surrounding the controversial hiring of Steve Jackson took a farcical turn on Wednesday.

The relationship between the offices of Police Minister Yasmin Catley and Police Commissioner Karen Webb has collapsed over the controversial appointment of a veteran news figure as the force’s most senior media adviser, leading to a police staffer being turned away from parliament this week.

Jackson’s appointment followed the dismissal of former chief media adviser Liz Deegan, which came after Webb was criticised over a series of high-profile public relations gaffes. In an interview with theon February 29, Catley was asked whether Webb needed better media advice and responded yes. Her office had by that time already begun sounding out potential candidates to replace Deegan.The issues came to a head this week when a police staffer was turned away from the minister’s office.

“Mr Jackson has been appointed to the role of Executive Director, Public Affairs of NSWPF on a temporary basis for six months,” the statement read.
