Renowned economist Baroness Shafik is in the eye of the storm as chief of New York's Columbia University, the focal point for student rallies now spreading across the globe
The renowned economist, who took up the post in July last year, is now facing calls to resign from students, professors and the House of Representatives speaker. She has also been fiercely criticised by pro-Palestine protesters, who have been calling for Columbia’s divestment from companies supporting Israel’s government, greater transparency in university finances and amnesty for students and staff disciplined over the demonstrations.
But analysts say she is now in a precarious position at Columbia. “These are incredibly difficult situations for a university president, especially someone who is not tested over time,” James Finkelstein, a professor emeritus of public policy at George Mason University, told CNN. “The likelihood of her keeping her job is at best 50-50.”
