Lexi received life-saving treatment just days after she was born
A 'miracle' baby who needed open-heart surgery days after she was born has just turned five-years-old. Lexi Boult was born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome - a defect that affects the blood flow to the left side of the heart - and a hole in her heart. At mum Michelle's 20-week scan, it was discovered Lexi had a heart defect, meaning she would have to have open-heart surgery as soon as she was born. Exactly five years ago today, Lexi underwent her first lifesaving heart surgery.
She still suffers from aortic stenosis - which occurs when the aortic valve narrows and blood cannot flow normally - and this continues to be monitored by doctors every year. 'We're keeping a very close eye on it,' Pam said. Lexi had a stint of pneumonia last year, and struggles with minor illnesses due to her weakened immune system. She will have to undergo open-heart surgery again once she becomes a teenager.
