Rochester, N.Y. (WHAM) Like most 3-year-olds, Remi Anthony is always on the move.
3-year-old Remi Anthony is in the process of a three-year treatment after she was diagnosed with leukemia. She's staying at Golisano Children's Hospital. It's a much different story now than it was a couple of years ago, when she came home form day care one day with a fever.But her mom — a neonatal intensive care unit nurse for more than a decade — had a feeling it was more serious.
"I just felt pretty uncomfortable with how long the high fevers were lasting, and she just wasn't turning the corner as fast as she had with previous viral illnesses," Jennifer Anthony said."The treatment for acute lymphoblastic leukemia in children is really intense and grueling," said Dr. Jeff Andolina, a pediatric hematologist oncologist at Golisano Children's Center. "Remi was enrolled on a national clinical trial through the Children’s Oncology Group.
And while she's a bright spot for the nurses and doctors at Golisano Children's Hospital, they've been a source of comfort for her family. "We had the best caregivers," Jennifer said. "From Day 1, we felt so trusting of our care team and like we were in the best hands we could be in.""Her labs have been much more stable, so she's been able to be more of a kid," Jennifer said. "We get to go to the library and get to go swimming and a little less anxious to be around people and germs."
Remi will be monitored for years to come, but her parents know she'll always have that winning smile and endless energy.
