A Blackpool man who died from complications from a knife wound two years after he was stabbed, was treated for alcohol withdrawal when he went to hospital, a court has heard.
But medics at Blackpool Victoria Hospital missed vital clues that Jeremy Fitzsimmons, 44, had a bowel hernia protruding into his diaphragm, a leading consultant told Preston Crown Court. Dr Anthony Bleetman, an expert in emergency medicine, reviewed the treatment of Mr Fitzsimmons following his death in October 2019.
However in September 2019, the patient returned to A & E complaining of severe abdominal pain. He told doctors he was an alcoholic who drank six litres of cider a day but had been alcohol free for four days, Dr Bleetman told the court. Mr Fitzsimmons was treated with oral and intravenous medicine to manage nausea, vomiting and the effects of alcohol withdrawal. A chest X-ray was also ordered.
"He should have undergone an emergency CT scan within an hour which would have identified the herniated bowel into the chest and would have led to emergency surgery within an hour or so. The likelihood of surviving that surgery would have been high."
