Trouble erupted in Bolton town centre on Sunday night, following disorder in Manchester on Saturday
Missiles were thrown as police came under attack from a gang of demonstrators when a protest turned ugly in Bolton town centre today .
The eruption of anger represented a second day of trouble in Greater Manchester, following disorder in Manchester city centre on Saturday afternoon when fights broke out. A supermarket had to be closed closed and public transport was brought to a standstill. What had initially been a largely peaceful encounter turned ugly, however, after the group of about 300 mostly Asian men arrived, sparking angry scenes between both sides.
Missiles were thrown at police amid increasingly angry scenes, with men who appeared to be leaders of the group urging people not to throw missiles. After the dispersal order was introduced by Greater Manchester Police, one of the leaders of the counter demonstration was handed a megaphone by the force. He warned people to follow police out of the square or risk arrest.
Worse violence has broken out in other parts of England and Northern Ireland following the killing of three young girls in Southport on Monday, with 147 arrests made since Saturday alone.Keir Starmer vowed rioters would “regret” engaging in “far-right thuggery” after a sixth day of escalating violence in England as the Government announced emergency security for mosques amid the threat of further disorder.
