The NRL has been left looking limp with Latrell Mitchell and Cody Walker seen to be pressuring decision makers during the Spencer Leniu-Ezra Mam racial abuse case.

Mitchell and Walker were the loudest voices in support for Mam – taking brave and noble stances, which this column supports – but the pressuring of the decision makers in Leniu’s judiciary case has embarrassed the NRL.

Some heavyweights at League HQ feel they have lost control of Mitchell, in particular, who, along with Walker, is the most respected Indigenous voice in the code. I have been told by sources with knowledge of the situation, who are not authorised to speak publicly, that there will be a private conversation with Mitchell and Walker – not to stop them from supporting Indigenous players, but to remind them they can’t try to influence judiciary cases. It was fitting that Souths coachcarried the infamous Book of Feuds with him on the flight to Brisbane for Thursday night’s loss to the Broncos.

“I blazed the trail for the likes of Latrell and Cody and others, and I hope they remember that. I hope to cross paths with Latrell at some point soon just to clear the air between us. I’m hoping my words will fire Latrell right up, and if they go on and win the title this year, they’ll have to let me in the right dressing rooms then so I can say I played the part by firing Latrell up.
