We had a term in Denver for the day when this tall, right-handed, ex-college wide receiver pitched. We called it “Jordan Lyles Theater.” On any given night, Lyles might give up seven runs and win or throw eight no-hit innings and lose. You name it, it seemed possible. But there’s a reason why he’s now pitching in his 13th season, for an eighth team. It’s because Lyles always shows up. He’s trustworthy.
He’s always lingering around league average by adjusted ERA and WHIP. And he’s good enough to pop, like he did last week giving up just three earned over eight innings against a surging Rangers squad. Sure, thelost that game. They’re losing a lot of games. But in a season they’re basically punting on, Lyles is giving the Royals a gift: A whole bunch of starts they don’t have to think much about.
