Checking in on how the Padres stack up with the best teams in Major League Baseball

They are confounding enough to be swept by the Rockies and now Mets, and certainly a second time by the NL-leading Phillies as is on the table as they take their road trip to Philadelphia.
Their best winning streak of the season is a four-game run and that was well over a month ago. They’ve lost five in a row twice.San Diego Padres |Despite sitting a game under .500, optimists will point out that the team is still tied for the NL’s third wild-card as they limp into Citizens Bank Park.
Realists know this team is 220-225 — five games under .500 — since moving an A.J. Preller ERA-record 18 games over .500 on Aug. 10, 2021, the start of a historic slide out of the postseason when it looked like so-called championship window was about to be heaved wide open. They’ve since needed a kick in the butt to get to the finish line in 2022 , missed the playoffs with the majors’ third-highest payroll last year and continue to spin their wheels this year.The best team in baseball is about to add Gerrit Cole back to the mix. He struck out 10 over 4⅓ innings in his most recent rehab assignment.The NL’s best team is getting Trea Turner back on Monday. He’s been out since May 3 with a hamstring injury and the Phillies didn’t miss him one bit. Weird.
