One of three experimental rules MLB will test this season is coming to the Atlantic League: Teams will be allowed to use a designated pinch runner who is not in the starting lineup. More details from Britt_Ghiroli.
First, it’s important to remember that not all of these experimental rule changes make it to MLB. But it’s clear with these new sets of rules that baseball is trying to get teams to leave their starting pitchers in longer and to continue to incentivize speed. The number one things fans said they missed about the game was stolen bases and this year’s rules — which include shorter basepaths and bigger bags — have already helped increase stolen base attempts and success rates.
“We thank the Atlantic League for their continued partnership,” MLB vice president of baseball operations Morgan Sword said in a statement. “In recent years, the ALPB’s experimental rules have aimed to emphasize athleticism, improved pace of play and other means of giving fans the game they want to see. We are excited for another great season of Atlantic League baseball and the entertainment that it will bring to fans.
“Our players and coaches are helping shape the future of the game,” Atlantic League president Rick White said.
