The film’s synopsis reads: After receiving an unexpected call from her wayfinding ancestors, Moana must journey to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters for an adventure unlike anything she’s ever faced.
The sequel is set to open in theaters Nov. 27, 2024. Johnson and Auli’i Cravalho both return for the film. Released in 2016, the firstgrossed more than $687 million at the global box office and earned Oscar nominations for Best Animated Feature and the original song “How Far I’ll Go” by Lin-Manuel Miranda. Set in ancient Polynesia, the first film opens as a terrible curse incurred by the demigod Maui reaches Moana’s island.
Johnson teased footage from the sequel at this year’s Cinemacon convention where he was also awarded a NATO Spirit of the Industry Award to large applause.
