It raised alarm and complaints from some parents that they inaccurately had been targeted. Blackwood told FOX10 News that his staff confirmed that some of those letters were erroneous. But he said that the Healthy Families Initiative has paid dividends. Blackwood said 11,834 students were truant in the 2023-’24 school year, down from 18,722 the previous year. Those who were “chronically absent” – defined as 18 absences in a school year – dropped from 17,767 to 9,734.
