Authorities responded to several incidents involving chemicals on Saturday.

) - Early Saturday morning, a fire broke out at a business near Halls Mill Road, prompting swift response from Mobile Fire-Rescue. MFRD Public Information Officer Jeff Haller says they got a call around 7 a.m. about a commercial building fire.

“They got here and noticed vehicles burning behind a warehouse,” explained Haller. “This is an area lined with businesses. Not a lot of high occupancy businesses on a Saturday. So there weren’t a lot of people in this area.”“Behind this location were stored a lot of pool chemicals, chlorine type materials,” said Haller. “Those started reacting with water and HAZMAT was called to this scene and at the moment, air was starting to be monitored, and we noticed a level of chlorine increasing.

As chlorine filled the area, Mobile Fire-Rescue took immediate action, issuing a shelter in place order within a two mile radius of the business where the fire started.Downed power lines, debris and burnt trucks were all that remained as crews worked to ensure the area was safe. Jim Henderson owns the buildings where the incident happened. He says after receiving a call from one of his employees, he arrived within five minutes.Henderson and his employee, Christopher Garrett returned to the scene after 9 a.m.

“I came to work and after about just a few minutes of being here, I heard a big boom and out of my peripheral, I see the power lines explode off the back of a power pole, hit the ground and everything engulfed in flames,” said Garrett.Around the time alerts were issued about this incident, Mobile Police Department responded to another accident involving chlorine. The department says a semi-truck carrying the chemical and a car were involved in an accident on Interstate 10.
