Fairley said her daughter’s crew had just transported a patient to a hospital in Mobile and was returning home when the team spotted the wreck. Welch testified that on the day of the accident in December he saw blood inside Thomas’s vehicle, along with a nicotine vape. He said that Thomas smelled of alcohol and had glassy and bloodshot eyes. He testified that Thomas told him he saw the other wreck on the street as he approached from the east on Moffett Road and tried to brake. The officer testified that the car’s “black box” indicates that Thomas was driving 30 mph when he hit the brakes – a half -second before the impact.
The earlier wreck occurred when a vehicle hit a pickup truck, spilled firewood on the road. But Officer Colton Futral testified that the debris already had been cleared by the time the second collision took place.
