Corte says roughly 40,000 people went to the Super 7 last year in Tuscaloosa with around 60,000 going the year before in Auburn. An event like that could bring in a lot of revenue here in Mobile.
) -Since 2009 the Super 7 football state championships have mostly been played either at Bryant Denny-Stadium or Jordan-Hare Stadium which has been the opportunity of a lifetime for teams like the Gulf Shores Dolphins who won last year’s 5A state title in Tuscaloosa.
But with the college football playoffs expanding to 12 teams the AHSAA has decided to remove Tuscaloosa and Auburn out of the rotation to avoid potential scheduling conflicts. Danny Corte with the Mobile Sports Authority says Mobile plans to put a bid together to join the rotation. “Let’s say there 40,000 that come through the gate in Mobile in December when the hotels need the business more than any time of year,” added Corte. “You’re talking about $15-$20 million impact and that’s on the low end.”
