Visit Mobile today announced the Son of a Sailor Fest, an event touted as a tribute to the late Jimmy Buffett and Gulf Coast music.
The inaugural Son of a Sailor Fest will take place on Saturday, September 21, 2024, in Cathedral Square in downtown Mobile.) - Organizers are counting on “Parrot Heads” and other visitors to flock to the heart of Mobile’s entertainment district for the occasion. The celebration will be free of charge.
Visit Mobile describes the Son of a Sailor Fest as “a family-friendly street festival.” It will feature a second-line parade, Parrot Head costume contests and musical acts inspired by Buffett and the area’s coastal culture. The headlining act of Son of a Sailor Fest, or S.O.S. Fest, will be A1A, the official Jimmy Buffett tribute show. The event’s committee has announced the addition of Will Kimbrough, an honorary Coral Reefer, writer and performer featured on Jimmy Buffett studio albums for 20 years.
Buffett, the popular singer-songwriter known for such touchstones as “Margaritaville” and “Come Monday,” died last year. The Gulf Coast native was raised in Mobile.
