Three police officers posed for a ‘joke’ chokehold photo at a memorial to a 23-year-old black man who died while in the custody of their department
Erica Marreno, Jarron Jones and Kyle Dittrich posed for a chokehold photo at the memorial of Elijah McClain, 23, who died after being arrested at the same spot two months previously
He will not be allowed to work as a police officer for any other Colorado Department. Dittrich and Marreno were fired over the snap, and will also be banned from working in law enforcement in their home state.Commenting on the cops’ behavior after distributing the photo on Friday, Aurora PD Interim Chief Vanessa Wilson said: ‘We are ashamed, we’re sickened and we’re angry.
Chief Wilson said: ‘He is being fired for his inability to do the right thing here.’ A spokesman for McClain’s family told CBS Denver of their disgust at the photo. ‘Now we learn that this is a department where uniformed police officers feel empowered to make a mockery of killing an innocent young Black man by returning to the scene of Elijah’s murder at the hands of fellow APD officers to take photos of themselves laughingly reenacting the chokehold used to murder Elijah.
The caller said they did not believe he posed any threat, with Elijah’s friends saying he was likely waving his arms to dance while listening to music on his headphones. Elijah vomited multiple times while in a chokehold, then said: ‘I’m sorry, I wasn’t trying to do that. I can’t breathe correctly.’
